Single Women vs. Self-Help Literature

I thought I’d share with you a short little post about a woman’s battle (especially a single woman) with self-help literature. Single women are bombarded left, right and center with useless books that claim to help you “find your perfect mate”, or “become the women that men want to marry”, etc. REALLY?!?!

[Table for One - This is just plain sad!]

[Who says you can find a happily ever after  without a significant other?!?]

Why do we subject ourselves to it? I think part of it may be that we’re in this state of mind that makes us think that maybe it’s something that’s wrong with us, something that we have done (or not done) that brought on this lonely state. Why don’t we see singleness literature aimed at men? Because singleness for a man is much different than it is for a woman. The ‘single’ status of a woman is looked upon negatively and in terms of what she is lacking. Thus where the battle begins.

[This has got to be the favourite book that I have come across - * Sarcasm implied!]

God has our lives mapped out. No matter what we attempt to do, nothing is going to change His plan or His timing. My advice to you: let go, and let God.

Don’t worry if you’re still single. God is looking at you right now saying,
'I’m saving this girl for someone special.' ” – Unknown.

How do you deal with self-help literature? Do you find you're getting mixed messages? Do you even bother reading them?

  1. I read a really good book that I'd recommend to any singles: "Common Mistakes Singles Make" by Mary S. Whelchel. Don't be turned off by the title - it's very encouraging and enlightening. Has a Christian perspective.
